How to Prepare a Digital Passport Photo?

If you are planning to renew your US passport online in 2025, it is important to take care of your digital photo in advance. The State Department strictly checks all images through the MyTravelGov portal, and the slightest errors will result in the rejection of the application. The photo must be a square 600 × 600 pixels in JPEG format and weigh no more than 240 KB. The face must take up 50-69% of the frame, the eyes must be approximately 60% from the bottom edge, and the background must be a flat white with no shadows. Glasses, filters, and any digital enhancements are prohibited. If the photo was taken more than six months ago, it will also not be accepted.

I recently went through an online passport renewal and can confirm that the system immediately rejects a photo if it doesn't meet the rules even a little. My first attempt didn't pass because of the background - a faint shadow was visible. I had to retake it with additional lighting so that the background looked uniformly white. In the end, the second time everything was accepted without any problems. I advise you to make several takes and check the file in advance.
