Erase Won't Work on Shapes

I'm probably doing this wrong (on the forum) but I couldn't think of another way to ask this question. The eraser doesn't seem to work on shapes, or any part of a shape.  I draw a shape and then want to erase part of it, but nothing happens. This is frustrating as I need a parabola image and want to chop the top off of an oval to get a parabola.  Any thoughts?
