The role of fantasy in exploring sexual identity

For me, fantasy stories were the first place I could “try on” different identities and see how they felt, especially when I was younger. It was like stepping into a world where I could explore questions about myself without fear of judgment. Whether it was gender, attraction, or just personality, fantasy gave me a space to experiment. I found some stories at https://18comix.org that really lean into that idea—characters discovering or testing parts of themselves in a world that feels safe for it. Does anyone else feel like fantasy allows more room for that kind of personal exploration?

Absolutely. Fantasy takes away the real-world limits, so it feels way easier and safer to explore identity, desire, or even just different ways of being. When the world is already magical or surreal, no one bats an eye if a character questions everything about themselves. It creates this freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere, and that can be incredibly validating—especially when real life feels more rigid.
